Testing

About Testing Department:

Testing Directorate of RDSO, primarily handles the crucial responsibility of undertaking design validation and homologation (Dynamic behavior assessment) of all newly designed/modified rolling stock developed in-house or imported, employing the latest state-of-the-art data acquisition and analysis tools and techniques. Our exploration of the trials and tests shape the future of rail travel, in our country. Testing Directorate, hence handsomely contributes in the relentless pursuit of excellence, driving the Indian Railways forward. Each trial and test represents a step towards a more efficient, reliable and enjoyable rail journey for all our customers. The Directorate shoulders the responsibility of conducting trials of ALL rolling stocks running on the IR system and Metro Railways in India. Besides undertaking actual field trials, the directorate has three labs Air Brake, Brake Dynamometer & Fatigue Testing for conducting stationary tests on rail components. The Air Brake and Fatigue Testing Labs are accredited by NABL i.e. National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories for testing compliant in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025.

Brief Achievements during last one year:

  1. To align with International standards, RDSO is switching over to the EN 14363 based methodologies for Testing and Statistical Assessment of Rolling Stocks. Fourth Report of the Standing Criterion Committee (SCC), detailing the Assessment of Rolling Stock as per EN-14363 based methodology for Broad Gauge (BG) has already been approved.
  2. Inducted new LHB Oscillograph Cars fitted with FIAT bogies and the latest electronic transducers, enhancing the testing fleet's capabilities.
  3. Through sustained dedication and efficient execution, Team Testing surpassed previous records by completing 146 tests and trials, including 111 field trials and 35 laboratory tests during the year 2024-25.

Current Assignments in hand:

  1. Development of Universal DPM (Data Processing Module). MoU signed with IISC, Bangalore.
  2. Development of EN-14363 based software
  3. Upgradation of Instrumentation for COCR (Confirmatory Oscillograph Car Run) trials
  4. Procurement of IMWs (Instrumented Measuring Wheels) for rolling stocks under additional account
  5. Procurement of items for UIC-518 implementation
  6. Procurement of Twist Test Rig and Yaw Test Rig.
  7. Procurement of High Inertia and High Speed Brake Dynamometer
  8. Augmentation of instrumentation capabilities in the Testing Directorate
  9. ABL / FTL Improvement / Augmentation
  10. Procurement of measuring instruments for Labs
  11. Procurement of 09 nos. LHB coaches and improvement of LHB Oscillograph cars
  12. Various field trials and tests in laboratories are in progress including First-ever trial based on the Fourth Report of the Standing Criterion Committee on SIEMENS 9000 HP loco EF-9k
