Testing

About Testing Department:

Testing Directorate plays a key role in design validation for all newly designed and / or modified rolling stocks through regular field trials like Oscillation trials, Coupler force and Controllability trials, Confirmatory Oscillograph Car Runs, Squeeze test, Emergency Braking Distance trial, Track Monitoring of Rajdhani Routes and also carries out some specialized nature of field trials like Rating & Performance trials, Jerk trials, Haulage Capacity trial etc. The Directorate also undertakes tests on all types of rolling stock sub-assemblies and their various components in its three laboratories namely Air Brake Lab (ABL), Brake Dynamometer Lab (BDL) and Fatigue Testing Lab (FTL). The ABL & FTL labs are accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for testing compliant to ISO/IEC 17025.

Brief Achievements during last one year:

  1. Commissioning trials of IMWs of LWACCW, Train18, WAP5, WAG9H, BOXNM2 and BOXNS completed and competency developed for UIC-518/EN-14363 standards for Rolling stock.
  2. Modernization of Testing and Trials involving procurement of latest instrumentation items.
  3. Procurement of DAQ (data acquisition) systems with connectors and Strain DAQ system.
  4. Upgradation of testing capabilities in Air Brake Lab from 30 ICF coaches to 30 LHB coaches and from 58 wagons to 132 wagons with digital data acquisition system.
  5. Rehabilitation of Instron Fatigue Testing system in Fatigue Testing Lab has been completed.
  6. A total 132 nos. of field trials and laboratory tests conducted and trial reports issued during the year 2022-23 which is 55% higher than the reports issued in the year 2021-22.

Current Assignments in hand:

  1. Final switchover to UIC-518 / EN 14363:2016 testing methodology.
  2. Procurement of 04 sets of IMWs for Vande Bharat motor coach, Vande Bharat trailer coach, LHB coach and Wagon container Dia. 840mm
  3. Procurement of High Inertia and High Speed Brake Dynamometer, P.O. placed
  4. Development of Universal DPM (Data Processing Module)
  5. Procurement of items for implementation of UIC-518
  6. Procurement of Twist Test Rig and Yaw Test Rig.
  7. Instrumentation Capabilities Augmentation - Testing
  8. ABL / FTL Improvement / Augmentation
  9. LHB Oscillograph car improvements
  10. Various field trials and tests in laboratories are in progress.
