About Traction Installation Department:

Traction Installation Directorate is engaged in design, development and introduction of appropriate technology for equipment related to Traction Distribution System. The Directorate is involved in evolving designs & standards to improve the reliability & availability of Traction Power Supply to Traction Distribution Network of Indian Railways. The main activities of the directorate are as under:

• Design & development of equipment used for Electrified Railway’s Traction System in India i.e. Traction Sub-Stations Equipment and Over Head Line Equipment.
• Standardization of equipment used for 25 kV Traction System & 2x25 kV AC Traction System.
• Providing technical consultancy in the field of Traction Power Distribution and Railway Electrification to Indian Railways and other agencies like - Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. – REMCL - MRVC - RITES - IRCON - Various State owned Metro Rail System

Brief Achievements in last one year (2024-25):

1. Technical Instruction No. TI/IN/0048 for implementing Cyber Security in the existing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System for 25 kV and 2x25 kV Single Phase 50Hz AC Traction Power Supply used in Indian Railways as per old Specification has been issued to Zonal Railways.
2. Technical Instruction No. TI/IN/0052 regarding Standard Operating Procedure for implementing Cyber Security Guidelines for protection of Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) of Indian Railways with respect to SCADA System has been issued to Zonal Railways.
3. Prototype testing and approval of 02 nos. of vendors for SCADA System as per revised Specification TI/SPC/RCC/SCADA/0134 carried out.
4. Revised specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/CLS/0025 for Control and Distribution panel for Color Light Signaling Supply in 25 kV AC Traction System has been issued.
5. Revised specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/AFL/0240 for Auto Transformer Neutral Current Ratio Based Automatic Fault Locator for 2X25 kV AC Traction System has been issued.
6. Revised specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/AUTOTR/1201 for 8MVA, 12.3MVA and 16.5MVA, ONAN, 55/27.5 KV Autotransformer has been issued.
7. Revised specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/LCMLA/0032 for Technical specification of leakage current monitor for lightning arrester has been issued.
8. A schedule of technical requirements (STR) No.IS/RDSO-TI/0001:0025 for approval of vendors for supply of Power Quality Restorer for 25kV and 2X25kV Traction System in Indian Railways has been prepared and issued.
9. A & C Slip No. 1 of Specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/LVCBIN/0121 (05/23) for 25kV Single Pole, Double Pole, Pole Mounted, outdoor Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB), and Vacuum Interrupter (BM) for Indian Railway has been issued.
10. 02 Firms have been approved as “developmental vendor” after prototype Tests per the Specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/LVCBIN/0121 (05/23) for the items -25kV Double Pole Vacuum Circuit Breaker and Vacuum Interrupter.
11. Re-validation of 01 firm as per revised Specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/LVCBIN/0121 (05/23) with A& C Slip No. 1) for the items -25kV Single pole and Double Pole Vacuum Circuit Breaker and Vacuum Interrupter has been approved.
12. 11 nos. Drawings for TSS, SP & SSP of Double line section have been revised and issued to zonal Railways on 10.03.2025.
13. A & C Slip No. 1 of Specification No. TI/SPC/PSI/TRNPWR/4200 for Single Phase Dual LV Winding Traction Power Transformersfor Indian Railways has been issued.
14. Number of Developmental vendors for item; 60/84/100MVA, 132/2X55kV and 220/2X55kV Scott Connected Traction Power Transformer has been increased from 01 to 04 and 00 to 01 respectively.
15. Number of Developmental vendors for item; 38/53/63MVA, 132/2X27.5kV and 220/2X27.5kV Single Phase Dual LV Winding Traction Power Transformer has been increased from 02 to 04 and 00 to 02 respectively.
16. Number of Developmental vendors for Autotransformers has been increased i.e. 02 to 03 for 8MVA, 02 to 03 for 12.3MVA & 03 to 04 for 16.5 MVA.
17. Relay setting guideline for Delta-I and backup DPR relay developed as per RDSO specification no. TI/SPC/PSI/PROTCT/6072 for 25KV AC traction system has been issued to Zonal Railways.
18. Specification no. TI/SPC/PSI/PROTCT/6072 to incorporate overload protection to OHE under first sub-sector has been revised and issued to Zonal Railways.
19. Vibration test and Contact wire wear test carried out in TI Laboratory for 90 nos. and 4 nos. of samples respectively.
20. Development of 107 sq.mm Silver Bearing Grooved Copper Contact wire. Issued specification and STR for use over IRs.
21. Development of Higher diameter CCR rod is being done though EOI. Proto type testing of two indigenous firms for this item have been completed. Advance correction slip no. 34 to ACTM Vol. II, Part-II, appendix I, para no. 18.11; ACTM Vol.–II, Part–II, fig A1.10 and ACTM Vol–II, part–I, chapter-7, Para 20703- Sub para 4.1 with regard to distance between OHE structure and signal post has been issued.
22. Technical Instruction No. TI/IN/0047 for “General Guidelines to Zonal Railways for OHE design in concourse area for station development projects” has been issued to Zonal Railways.
23. Maintenance Instruction No. TI/MI/0055 Rev. 1 on “Identification of Defects on Traction Installation using Thermo Vision Camera and Preventive Action” has been issued to Zonal Railways.
24. Instruction regarding Live line Monitoring Gauge (LLMG) issued to Zonal Railways.
25. Approval of Clearance study at Bikaner (BKN) ROB Loc. between 460/27 & 28- 460/29 & 30 of Bikaner Station for execution of Railway Electrification Work has been issued.
26. MoU signed with IIT Madras dated 28.03.2025 regarding Drone Inspection of OHE Parameters.
27. Audit of various TRD Depots of Indian Railway.
28. Approval of one firm for item “Short Neutral Section” and two firms for “Light Weight Section Insulator Assembly”.
29. Approval of one firm for item Five Pulley ATD and for item Spring ATD for 2400kgf tension respectively.
30. Instruction issued to Zonal Railway for uses of steel dropper/multiple copper droppers at girder bridges.
31. Letter issued to RB regarding Revision of Metro Railways (General) Rules, 2020 No. 73(4) and 78(4).
32. Special Maintenance Instruction No. TI/MI/0059 Rev - 3 issued to all ZRs for Provision of Anti-bird disc & Packing saddle (RI No. 1174) with Catenary Suspension clamp (RI No.1161).
33. Special Maintenance Instruction No. TI/MI/0055 Rev- 2 issued to all ZRs for “Identification of Defects on Traction Installation using Thermo Vision Camera and Preventive Action.
34. ACS of ACTM regarding Commissioning of Electric Traction-Necessary amendments to the ACTM Vol. II, Part-I (Revised-2022) of Chapter-10 Indian Railway and ACS of ACTM regarding Competency for Isolator operation by Group- D TRD staff has been sent to Railway Board for approval.
35. Committee Report Rev-1 on MSG Item no. 31.1: Catenary strands cut inside suspension clamps has been issued.
36. Development of Dedicated Test track at Nawa City, Jaipur.
37. Use of 150 sq.mm Hard Drawn Stranded Copper wire in place of 234 sq. mm (Aluminium spider) with 65/107 mm2 OHE Configuration for 2X25kV AC Traction System issued to Railway Board.
38. Revised Drawing of Parallel clamp ETI/OHE/P/1550 Rev F has been issued to Zonal Railway.
39. RDSO has issued an arrangement carrying of feeder wire directly on the top mast without super mast or carrying of feeder wire on small length of super mast along with cross arm on opposite side of OHE in connection with 2x25 KV systems in Indian Railways.
40. Provision/arrangement has been provided to WR regarding suitable guy rod and Anchor loop for Proposed OHE having tension 3000 kgf required for up-gradation of catenary and contact wire (125/150 sq.mm) to improve reliability of OHE in VR-DRD section of Mumbai division.
41. Drawings regarding OHE Mast Employment schedule for various wind zones with 1500 kgf tension in 125 mm2 catenary wire & 1500 kgf tension in 150 mm2 contact wire for HDN route has been issued to all Zonal Railways.
42. Specification for Tensile Testing machine has been revised.
43. Handling Instruction for 25 kV Porcelain insulator No. TI/IN/0051, Rev-0 issued.
44. Dispatch clearance and Inspection Certificate have been issued   for 0 9 Nos. 8W-DETC (#005 to #013) manufactured by M/s SAN Engineering & Locomotive Co. Ltd., Bangalore, (after Routine inspection carried out  against Railway Board’s P.O.
45. Guidelines/instructions for modification in Exhaust end pipe assembly and trap door in 8 Wheeler DHTC of M/s. BEML make has been issued.
46. Maintenance Instruction No. TI/MI/0043 Rev.4 for   8-Wheeler Tower Wagons covering Instructions for DETC and DHTC, have been revised and issued   after obtaining approval from Railway Board.
47. Guideline for retro fitment of speed recorder in Mark-II 4-Wheeler Tower Wagons   issued   for the implementation by All Zonal Railways in balance Mark-II 4-Wheeler Tower Wagons which have significant residual life (minimum 2 years).
48. Corrigendum Slip no. 01 to A & C Slip no. 01 of Technical Specification no. TI/SPC/ONE/NETRA10143 (03/2022) for B.G. ONE Parameter Recording cum Test Car (NETRA) for Electrical Traction at 160 kmph has been issued.
49. 33rd Maintenance Study Group (MSG/TrD) Meeting conducted at Baroda House New Delhi and recommendations regarding maintenance and standardization have been circulated to Zonal Railways.
50. 321 Hours (215 Certificate/5547 Marks/points earned) in Karmyogi training by staff and officers of TI Directorate and 301 Man-days set target of training to staff is achieved as 486 Man-days.
51. Special drive of cleaning was conducted in Directorate.
