About Loco, EMU & Power supply Department:

Loco, EMU & Power supply vertical engaged in developing designs and standards of electrical equipment and systems for electric locomotive, train set, EMU, MEMU, Metro rolling stock, train lighting, Air conditioning & power supply items of coaches. The Developments of Vendors for critical/safety items like brake system, bearing, Battery, Rubber items and New technology items. Directorate works in close co-ordination with ZRs/PUs in improving safety, availability, reliability, efficiency, better comfort to passengers and maintainability of equipments used in various types of Rolling stock.

Brief Acheivements in 2022-2023:

  1. The specification for 9000HP IGBT based three phase drive electric freight locomotive has been finalized. It results in finalization of manufacturing and supply contract for 1200 numbers 9000HP locomotives. These locomotives will get introduced in IRs by March’2025.
  2. Finalization of Specification with ICF for complete Vande Bharat Train including train of speed potential 200 kmph:-
    1. Specification No- ICF MD SPEC-404 for Distributed Power System (Light Weight Aluminum Bodied coaches)
    2. Specification No.: ICF MD SPEC-405 for Concentrated Traction (Light Weight Aluminum Bodied coaches)
  3. RDSO finalize specification no. ICF MD SPEC-408, ISSUE STATUS-01, REV-00 for Light weight Energy Efficient Air-conditioned Vande Metro (Mainline) and specification no. MRVC/EL//ROLLING STOCK/3&3A/T.SPEC ISSUE STATUS-01, REV-00, May - 2023 for Light weight Energy Efficient Air-conditioned Vande Metro (Sub-Urban).
  4. Development of Roof Mounted Air Conditioning  Package Unit with Reverse Cycle and VVVF feature.
  5. Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries have been introduced in Vande Bharat 2.0 rakes for first time over Indian Railways and in SG Non AC (Conventional Coaches) at NCR and under Trial.
  6. Development of 9000HP Propulsion kit for Electric Locomotives designated as WAG-9HH. All prototype tests for propulsion system of Siemens, Medha & BHEL completed.
  7. Development of computer/Microprocessor controlled Brake system for three phase Electric Locomotive.
  8. Development of EP assisted Brake system for 3-phase Electric Locomotive to improve Brake application & release time.

Current Assignments in hand:

  1. Development of the specification and standards for procurement of 6000HP IGBT based three phase drive Electric Freight Locomotive.
  2. Development of the specification and standard for High horse power high speed Electric Passenger Locomotive withspeed potential of 200 kmph.
  3. Development of the specification for 2000/1350 KW Dual mode Hybrid Shunting Locomotive.
  4. Design & Development of Train set with 3-phase propulsion system of M/s Medha, M/s BT-Alstom, M/s Siemens, M/s BHEL, M/s Saini, M/s CGPISL and M/s Titagarh against ICF Purchase Order.
  5. Design & Development of Kolkata Metro rolling stock with 3-phase propulsion system of M/s Medha & M/s BHEL against ICF Purchase Order.
  6. Design & Development on-board MEMU with 3 phase electrics from M/s CGPISL and M/s BHEL against ICF & MCF Purchase Order.
  7. Design & Development of on-board EMU & MEMU with 3-phase propulsion system of M/s BT-Alstom M/s Titagarh, M/s BHEL against ICF Purchase Order
