Role of the Directorate

  • Issue of Standard drawings for Railway Bridges (Steel, Composite, PSC and RCC), Road Over Bridges (Composite and truss type Bow String), Foot Over Bridges, Steel bridge sleepers etc.
  • Formulation and updation of codes, manuals & guidelines on various aspects related to bridge loading, design, planning, construction etc
  • Clearance of Design Basis Report of Metros and Non-standard important railway bridges.
  • Vetting of Speed Certificates for different rolling stocks from bridge point of view for facilitating trials and operation of new rolling stocks.
  • Development & adoption of new technology for bridges on Indian Railways is done for induction of new technology.
  • Registration of vendors for Steel girder fabrication, elastomeric bearings, POT-PTFE bearings, expansion joints and HSFG bolting assemblies is done for quality assurance during fabrication of bridges.
  • Fabrication inspection of newly fabricated steel bridge girders where RDSO is engaged as an inspecting agency by Zonal Railways is done to ensure quality fabrication of these steel girders.
  • Rail Structure Interaction (RSI) analysis for ballasted deck bridges for Zonal Railways  for continuation of LWR/CWR over such bridges.
  • NDT Testing and instrumentation is conducted on bridges referred by Zonal Railways.
  • Bridge and Structures Standard Committee Meetings are conducted for discussion and finalization of various technical issues related to bridges over Indian Railways.
  • Development of new loading standards and dealing issues related to floods. Bridge related Consultancy services to Zonal Railways are also one of the major task.

Brief Achievements of the Directorate during last one year

  1. Vetting of 184 speed certificates and 33 Nos. trial reports of different types of  rolling stocks from bridge point of view.
  2. Approval of 33 vendors of Steel Bridge Girder, Elastomeric Bearing, POT-PTFE Bearing, Expansion Joints and HSFG bolts.
  3. Compendium work for RCC Box RUBs completed. This will help field engineers in planning, designing & executing of RUBs over Indian Railways.
  4. Technical approval of instrumentation schemes for 20 Nos. bridges (1 of NER, 14 of CR, 4 of ECR and 1 of SECR).
  5. Guidelines for suitability of existing bridges (Composite/RCC/PSC Super-Structure) designed to BGML, RBG and MBG-1987 loading for running 25t loading-2008 at 100kmph on DFC Feeder Routes and 25t identified routes issued.
  6. 88th BSC meeting was successfully held on 03rd & 04th January 2025 at Puri.
  7. A&C Slip No. 11 to IRS Concrete Bridge Code regarding Ultra high performance Concrete issued.
  8. Design Basis Report for Bridge no. 31 of Northern Railway across river Yamuna has been approved.
  9. The design and drawings of 12.2m PSC 4 unit Post tensioned Slab (Drg. No. 10286 Series), 9.15m PSC 3 unit Post tensioned Slab(Drg. No. 10287 Series) & 6.1m PSC 3 unit Post tensioned slab(Drg. No. 10288 Series) for DFC loading issued.
  10. Standard drawings of single box culvert ( size 6mX6m) for double line straight track upto 30º skew RDSO/B-10162/R & 10162/1/R issued.
  11. Guidelines for inspection, Maintenance & Construction of RUBs/Subways (BS-138) issued.
  12. Design of RCC duct of size 300X300X100mm for laying of S&T cable for moderate environment exposure condition conforming to 25 t loading 2008 issued.
  13. Repository of Non-RDSO Railway Structures (Railway Bridge/ROR/Viaduct/PF Shelter/FOB & Bearing) issued.
  14. New Design & Drawings of 12.2m PSC 3 unit Post tensioned slab(Drg. no. 10289 series) for 25t loading & New Design & Drawings of 30.5m PSC Post tensioned  Box Girder(Drg. no. 10290 series) for 25t loading issued.
  15. New Design & Drawings of 9.15m PSC "U" Slab post tensioned Drawing series RDSO/B-10291 for 25 t loading issued.
  16. Standard Drawings of Single RCC box culvert for double line track curve, earth fill 3M to 10M RDSO/B-10157/5 to RDSO/B-10157/10 issued.
  17. Design & drawing  of LTE/Kavach tower with foundation for 6.5 EPA for cyclonic region for SER is structurally checked by B&S Dte.
  18. A&C Slip no. 24 regarding amendement in clause 3.6 fluctuation of stress (fatigue) to IRS Steel bridge code issued.
  19. Drawing for Height Gauge( Drg. no. CBS-0051) issued.
  20. Drawing for 30.5 m OWG with ballasted deck(Drg. no. RDSO/B-17186) issued.
  21. Drawing for service Cable on OWG(Drg. no. CBS-0038/R3) issued.
  22. Revision of Standard drawings ( Nos. RDSO/B-10341/R & RDSO/B-10343/R) of Mass Concrete Pier have been done for DFC loadings.
  23. Revision of Standard drawings (Nos.RDSO/B-10337/R2,RDSO/B-10339/R2, RDSO/B-10345/R, RDSO/B-10349/R2 & RDSO/B-10351/R) of Mass Concrete Pier have been done for 25t  loading-2008.
  24. Revision of Standard drawings(Nos.RDSO/B-10338/R2,RDSO/B-10340/R2, RDSO/B-10352/R, RDSO/B-10350/R2 & RDSO/B-10346/R) of Mass Concrete abutment have been done for 25t  loading standard.
  25. New Design & Drawings of 6.10m PSC Post tensioned U Slab (Drg. No. RDSO/B-10292 series) for 25t-2008 loading issued.
  26. New Design & Drawings of 4.57m PSC Post tensioned U Slab (Drg. No. RDSO/B-10293 series) for 25t-2008 loading issued.
  27. New Design & Drawings of 12.2m, 9.15m & 6.1m footpath Slab (Drg. no. RDSO/B-10294) issued.
  28. Revised design & drawings of 30.5m, 24.4m & 18.3m  composite Girder for 25T loading with provision of longitudinal seismic restrainer and increased stiffness of elastomeric bearings has been issued.
  29. Guidelines for Quality Control, Erection, Inspection & Maintenance of PSC Girders (BS-141) issued.
  30. Design Basis Report of 2nd Saraighat Railcum Road Bridge No. S-1 over river Brahmaputra of N F Rly has been approved & accepted.
  31. Revision of Standard drawings ( Nos. RDSO/B-10357/R2,RDSO/B-10358/R2, RDSO/B-10359/R, RDSO/B-10360/R & RDSO/B-10361/R) of RCC Pier have been done for 25t  loading-2008.
  32. New Standard Design & Drawings of RCC Pier for 12.2M PSC Slab (RDSO/B-10375 & RDSO/B-10376) for 25t loading has been issued.
  33. New Standard Design & Drawings of RCC Pier for 12.2M PSC I Girder (RDSO/B-10377, RDSO/B-10378, RDSO/B-10379 & RDSO/B-10380) for 25t loading-2008 has been issued.
  34. Revised Guidelines on Non-Destructive testing of Bridges (BS-103 R1) issued.
  35. A&C Slip no. 2 of IRS Seismic Code-2020 regarding modification in Clause 22.1.1 issued.
  36. A&C Slip no. 12 of IRS Specification for Fabrication & erection of Steel Girder Bridges & Locomotive Turn-Tables B-1 for replace Clause 8.1 to 8.4 issued.
  37. Guidelines for suitability checking of sub-structures of bridges for 25t loading-2008 as Report no. BS-123 R1 issued.
  38. Standard drawing of segmental RCC box culvert for limited height subway for multiple track on curvature up to 10 degree conforming to 25t loading( Drg. no. RDSO B-10163 & RDSO B 10163/1) issued.
  39. Drawing of 72m clear span (Drg. no. RDSO/B-10442 series) 2 lane one way(for 4 lane) camel-back shape truss type girder has been issued.
  40. Drawing of 48 m clear span (Drg. no. RDSO no. RDSO/B-10443 series) 2 lane one way(for 4 lane) camel-back shape truss type girder has been issued.
  41. Drawing of 60m clear span (Drg. no. RDSO no. RDSO/B-10444 series) for 7.5 m carriageway camel back shape truss type girder has been issued.
  42. Guideline for assessment of residual fatigue life of steel bridge girder BS-91(R) issued.
  43. Guidelines for fabrication, erection, launching & testing of RDSO standard BOW String Girder BS-139 issued.
  44. New RDSO standard drawings for 7.5 m carriageway width Rob with footpath on both sides for 18m,24m,30m,36m & 42m spans have been issued.
  45. New RDSO standard drawings for 72m & 48 clear span camelback shape for two lane one way ROB as per IRC SP: 84  have been issued.
  46. New RDSO standard drawings of 60m clear span camelback shape for two lane two  way ROB has been issued
  47. New RDSO standard drawings for 12m wide FOB with improved ramp arrangement has been issued.
  48. Guidelines for Fabrication, Quality control, Erection, Inspection and Maintenance of Steel Plate/Composite Girder of Foot Over Bridges BS-140 issued.
  49. A technical paper on Fatigue Failure of Bridge No. 57 on Howrah-Kharagpur High density Route of South Eastern Railway has been published in compendium in International seminar: Beyond construction: sustaining heavy haul networks, with predictive maintenance Compendium.
  50. New Design of 42m Clear span Composite plate Girder ROB in consultation with NHAI Complying to IRC SP 84, IRC SP 87 & IRC SP 73 issued.

Current Assignment in hand

  1. Standardization of design & drawings of 1 span of Open Web Girders with ballasted deck for 25-t loading with its suitability for passenger train operation upto 220kmph.
  2. Research Project with CSIR-SERC on “Evaluation and management of longitudinal forces on substructure of Railway Bridges”
  3. Detailed checking of all standard drawings of Concrete girders including bearings /slabs for 25t loading.
  4. Dynamic analysis and evaluation of existing RDSO standard bridge superstructures for various axle load and speed configurations.
  5. Preparation of Appreciation Report for field trials of Continuous Scour Monitoring of Bridge Foundation.
  6. Review of Manual on Design and Construction of Well and Pile Foundation.
  7. Revision of RDSO Standard design of PSC ‘U’ slab/girder.
  8. Development of arrangement for passing of service cable on open web girder.
  9. Development of arrangement for inspection of top chord on open web girder.
  10. Design of Camel Back Truss type ROB Girders for various Standards Span for 4 & 6 Lane highways as per latest IRC Specification.
  11. Design of Camel Back Truss type ROB Girders for 4 (two lane two way) various Standards Span (camel back girders for 7.5 m carriage way with both side footpath.
  12. Guideline for Outsourcing Work of Developing General Arrangement, Structural Design & Drawings & Proof Checking of Bridges to Outside Consultants..
  13. Design & Drawings of two wheeler ROBs is in process.
  14. Design & drawings of side pathway for plate girder.
  15. Design & drawings for sliding bearings for plate girders.
