Geotechnical Engineering

About Geotechnical Engineering Department:

Geotechnical Engineering Directorate of RDSO deals with Geotechnical Engineering matters of Indian Railways. It has well equipped laboratory with all conventional and latest modern soil testing facilities. Main areas of activities  involves  Advise on matters concerning Geotechnical Engineering to Indian Railways,  Framing and updating Guidelines/Manuals/Specifications for Earthwork, Ballast and Tunnels, Super check of earthwork in new constructions, Consultancy on Geotechnical Engineering problems to various Zonal Railways, Training of Railway personnel in Geotechnical Engineering. Adoption of new products/technologies pertaining to Geotechnical Engineering.

Brief achievements of the Department during last one year and current year:

  • Development of Specification for Track Ballast as ‘National Standard’ along with BIS Identification
  • Guidelines for Use of Coir Geo-Textile for slope protection in  Indian Railways
  • Guidelines on Soft Soils & Methods of Ground Improvement
  • Revision of Guidelines for Cuttings in Railway, No. GE: G-2
  • Compendium on Case studies for formation problems in Indian Railways
  • Solutions to Field problems-Consultancy/Reports;
  1. Landslide at Km 202/23-31 between stations Manabar-Jarati on Kothavalsa-Kirundul section (KK line) of Waltair division, East Coast Railway
  2. Settlement of formation at Km. 110/6-8 between Jatinga-Lumpur-New Harangajao stations in Lumding-Badarpur hill section of Lumding Division, Northeast Frontier Railway
  3. Settlement of formation between stations Lachyan and Tadwal in Gadag-Hotgi section, Hubballi division of South Western Railway
  4. Bulging/failure of retaining wall in cuttings between stations Baghuapal (BGPL) and Duburi of Angul-Sukinda section, Khurda Road Division, East Coast Railway
  5. Consultancy report on rehabilitation of weak formation on Patna - Kiul section of Danapur Division, East Central Railway

Current assignments in hand:

  • Development of suitable Design of Bridge Transition system for 25t axle load for freight (up to 100Kmph) and passenger traffic (up to 160/200 Kmph operational speed) for IR , with IIT/Delhi
  • UIC project on “Design of formation for Mixed traffic-Passenger train up to 240 kmph and Freight train of 25t axle load up to 120 kmph”
  • Review of booklet on Geotechnical testing for railway engineers for quality control (GE:G-3, Dec. 2004)
  • Review of Guidelines for Geotechnical engineering organization in Zonal Railway (RDSO/2007/GE:G-0011, Jan., 2008)
  • Review of Guidelines for rehabilitation of weak formation (GE:G-6, June, 2005)
  • Ground Penetration Radar survey for monitoring of ballast & formation condition along with South Central Railway
  • Development of Methodology and Specifications for Utilisation of Steel Slag as Formation Material in Railway Track
  • Development of design & trial of Reinforced soil wall on Indian Railway
