About Wagon Department:

The main activity of this directorate is to design freight wagons and their related components. Wagon Directorate has developed designs for a wide range of commodities and consignments, the largest being 28 axle wagon of 296 tonnes carrying capacity wagon. The wagon directorate also renders consultancy to industry on special wagons for manufacturers executing export order. Wagon Directorate is the nodal agency of IR for all design and technical issues related to freight stock. Its main activities are Design and development of wagons to cater requirement of industry, Formulating maintenance Instructions for wagons, Redressal of manufacturing and maintenance issues related to wagons, Nodal agency for issue of speed certificate for wagons,   Organizing oscillation trials of wagons, Approval of wagon design of private parties, Vender Approval of Weigh Bridge suppliers and items controlled by Directorate and Model Approval of Tippler.

Brief achievements in last one year:

  1. Development of two new designs of salt carrier wagons. These designs are provided with collapsible/telescopic cover to enable top loading of salt in order to utilize the full loading potential of the wagon.
  2. Development of 25t axle load open wagon type ‘BOXNS’ This wagon is having best ever pay to tare ratio of 4:1 and is provided with indigenously developed Light Weight Low Height bogie.
  3. Development of new design of auto car wagon (BCACBM) with twin deck with reduced cost of construction.
  4. Development of New 25 T axle load bogie (LWLH25) with K class CTRB for all future requirements.
  5. Development of higher capacity steel coil carrying flat wagon of 22.9 ton axle load capacity (BFNSM 22.9)
  6. Development of 25T Container Flat Wagon (BLCS). This wagon is suitable for uniform loading as well as point loading.
  7. Development of Fly Ash/ Cement wagon (BCFCM).This wagon is provided with air assisted bottom discharge system for quick unload of Flyash/Cement. 

 

Current assignments in hand:

  • Speed potential of 70% of IR owned wagons (2 lakhs) increased to 100 Kmph in empty and 75 Kmph in loaded conditions.
  • New design of wagons was developed for Ministry of Defense and prototype is under manufacture.
  • New design of tank type "BTCS" prepared and handed over to Ms. Braithwaite.
  • New design of Roll-on-Roll-off type “RO-RO” wagon prepared. Prototype is under manufacture at MIs. Braithwaite.
  • Indigenous sources developed for high capacity draft gear and slack less draw bar.
  • Specification for low torque grease seal finalized to improve performance of bearing
