Welcome to Track Design Directorate

Role of Directorate:

Main functions of directorate are Research, Design and Development of Rails, Welding Technology, Sleepers, Fastenings, Turnouts, Long Welded Rails, Ultrasonic testing etc. The Track Directorate also provides consultancy to Zonal Railways on the matters pertaining to track, Development and standardization of new innovations reported by the Railways.

The process of development involves framing the specification. In case development is to be followed by field trials, further work involving preparation of detailed trial scheme, collection and analysis of data, change of design, if necessary, and final approval of the item are also undertaken.

Brief Achievements in last one year:

  1. Development of R260 rails.
  2. Guidelines for FB welding and AT welding of R260 grade rails
  3. Revision of “Indian Railway Standard Specification for Ultrasonic Testing of Rails/Welds”, Revised-2020.
  4. Modification in End Unloading Rake (EUR) Drawings
  5. Revision of “Indian Railway Standard Specification for Fusion Welding of Rails by Alumino Thermic Process”, Serial No. IRST-19-2020
  6. Revision of “Item specific guidelines for hard facing electrodes for reconditioning of crossings, switches and SEJs”.
  7. Revision of “Item specific guidelines for vendor approval / extension of approval for manufacture of AT welding portions and execution of AT rail joints”.
  8. Called EOI for items having less than 3 Vendors (Vendor Directory Items)
  9. A&C Slip No. 5 of “Manual for Ultrasonic testing of rails and welds”, Revised-2012
  10. Identification of Routes for Rail Grinding Machines
  11. Revised Proforma for Rail Grinding data collection

Current Assignment in hand:

  • Development of 1175HT grade rail and AT Welding Technique
  • Development of new technologies for Rail fracture detection system
  • Development of Corrosion Resistant Rails (Cu-Mo Rail and N.C.C. Rails)
  • Development of improved Glued Joint and standardization of in-situ glued joint and refurbishment of existing glued joints
  • Rail stress monitoring system
  • Development of composite sleeper for Indian Railways
  • Development of Technology for Insitu reconditioning of CMS crossing
  • Development of weldable CMS crossing  &  canted Turnouts, Thick-web switch expansion joint
  • Field trial of CMS crossing 1 in 12, 60 Kg (UIC) with integrally cast blocks on PSC sleepers
  • Development of technology for reduction in ballast thickness using USP
  • Field trial of SGCI insert with improved metallurgical properties and High Viscous Nylon (HVN) liner, galvanized metal liners
  • Field trial of LWR on sharp curves and steep gradients
