Malaviya Chair for Railway Technology at IIT-BHU
During Budget Speech 2015-16, Minister of Railway has announced for ‘Malaviya Chair’ for Railway technology at IIT-BHU. In this regards memorandum of understanding has been signed between Ministry of Railway & IIT-BHU on 8th June 2015 for setting up of Malaviya Chair for Railway technology at IIT-BHU. The objective & role of the chair is to promote research and development of new materials for use in various assets of Railways. Funding of the Malaviya Chair is being done through the interest accrued on the endowment fund of Rs. 5 Crore (Rupees five crore only) provided by the Indian Railway to IIT-BHU. This MOU aims at collaborative between Indian Railways and IIT (BHU) in the following field:

- Material science and engineering

- Structural and microstructural characterization , micro structural modifications, thermodynamics and phase equilibria
- Novel routes of processing of material for better strength to weight ratio, joining of metals of new grades
- Fatigue and fracture ,Tribological studies
- Ultrafine grain materials, microstructural modifications, bainitic steel
- New materials for requirements of future needs

Projects in Progress
a. Development of Light weight FRP runner (Impeller) for blower fan assembly of Roof Mounted Package Unit (RMPU) fitted in AC coaches.-Power Supply & EMU Directorate, RDSO Lucknow
b. Development of long life Nylon bushes for Alternator with suitable material composition to avoid failure of bushes.- Power Supply & EMU Directorate, RDSO Lucknow
Current Major Activity:
An Annual seminar on ‘Material Science & Engineering has been organized at RDSO on 16th February 2016 for dissemination of knowledge & sharing of research results to Indian Railways.
