Railway Design Center at NID, Ahmedabad

1.   Brief National Institute of Design (NID) at Ahmedabad


The National Institute of Design (hereinafter referred to as "NID"), an autonomous Institute, established in 1961 under the aegis of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India for providing world class design education, training and applied research. NID is an autonomous National Institution for design education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, advanced training, design research and integrated design services. NID has since gained international recognition as one of the foremost institutions in the field of design and as a catalyst for design intervention and application in Indian industry at all levels. NID is a multi-campus Institute, having its main campus in Ahmedabad, PG Campus in Gandhinagar and R&D Campus at Bengaluru. The Institute is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. It also undertakes outreach, consultancy and industry programmers & projects.


2.   Memorandum of understanding with NID, Ahmedabad


A memorandum of understanding has been signed between Ministry of Railways and National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad for setting up of “Railway Design Centre” at NID, Ahmedabad on the 10th April, 2015.

3.   Railway Design Centre Monitoring Committee (RDCMC)



Main activity of RDCMC


·        To identify proposed areas of design intervention and application for the Railways,

·        Frame guidelines for the operation & management of the RDC including approval & annual allocation of funds for taking up various design research, development and design consultancy activities.


4.   Possible areas of R&D with NID,Ahmedabad


The possible areas of Railway Functioning for collaboration are –


a)     Improvement in Station Area -


·        Colour scheme of the station building, platform shelter, FOBs, adjoining fencing etc.

·        Station Name Boards

·        Signage and Display Boards

·        Efficient Coach Watering System for speedy filling of coach tanks and to avoid wastage of water

·        Ergonomic Seating Design on the platform and waiting hall

·        Toilets on the platform, stations and in waiting hall

·        Garbage disposal & Dustbins on platforms & stations

·        "May I Help You" Kiosk

·        Vending Kiosks (static & mobile) on the platform w.r.t. optimum utilization, aesthetics, durability, maintainability & modularity

·        Ticketing Kiosks

·        Circulating Area design including Entry / Exit of stations and parking

·        Ramps for Physically Challenged passengers

·        Planning for location of Escalator

·        Rain Water Harvesting System for stations (of different types and sizes)

·        Methods/Measures to De-clutter the station premises

·        Roof of station buildings which does not become night shelter for pigeons, affecting cleanliness

·        Recycling of Water in stations

·        Water Supply, Drinking Water Booths at platforms

·        Waste Management System and Cleaning of stations

·        Mobile & Laptop Charging Points at stations

·        Platform Coverings  .

·        Foot Over Bridge

b)      Coaches including-


·        Coach Layouts

·        Exterior and Interior Colour Schemes

·        Interior Paneling of Coaches

·        Seat and Berth Design, particularly the side lower seat (without any ladder for climbing the upper berth)

·        Improved Ladders for all classes upper berths passengers

·        Toilet Fittings & their layout

·        Luggage Storage in coaches

·        Service Counters, Storage &Handling of food, Mini Pantry inside coaches

·        Development of Fire Worthy coaches

·        Development of Disabled Friendly Layouts of coaches

·        Development of Layouts inside Pantry Cars

·        Interior Design of Mini Pantry

·        Improvement to Interior of EMU/MEMU including design of collapsible seats

·        Grab Handle Design

·        Suitable Design of Foot Step for EMU

·        Design of Double Decker Suburban Coaches

c)     Lighting & Air-Conditioning issues -


·        Lighting Arrangement

·        Reading Light

·        Electrical Panel Layout review

·        Infotainment System

·        Individual Temperature Control in each cabin

·        Touch Screen Control in Electrical Panel

·        Interior design of AC Ducting


d)     Signal & Telecom related and Passenger Amenity issues-


·        Public Announcement System including its fitment locations

·        Tower Clock and other Digital Clock

·        Train Indication & Public Address VDU design 

·        Pane Room, Relay Rooms, Battery Room including Ergonomic Control panel & Block interface/Panel designs


e)     Public Relation Issues -


·        Designing of Indian Railways Logo 

·        Designing of stamps/coins on IR for special occasions

·        Designing of Railway Exhibition Stalls

·        Designing of advertisement, print material, brochure, pamphlet, souvenir, memento etc.

5.   Project proposed with NID, Ahmedabad


Following project have been proposed so far with NID, Ahmedabad

  1. Climbing arrangement for middle and upper births in reserved coaches(ICF&LHB)

  2. Color scheme ( exterior and interior both) for 200 km/h rake expected to be turned out from RCF/Kapurthala by December ,2015

  3. Improvement in interior of LHB & ICF variants

  4. Modular design of seats and berths

  5. User –friendly toilet in coaches

  6. Collapsible seats for EMUs

  7. Double Decker suburban train
