I- Nature of Work
  1.  Testing of Paints based on Alkyd, Epoxy and PU based paint for establishing the validity of specifications framed by M&C Dte.
2.  Testing of paint samples forwarded by QA Dte. in connection with Vendor approval / reapproval.
3.  Testing of paint samples forwarded by QA Dte. in connection with Quality Audit of paint firms.
4.  Corrosion studies related to Rail and  Rail fastenings .
5.  Corrosion studies related to OHE components.
6.  Corrosion studies related to Wagon construction materials.
7.  Project work on development of fire retardant paint for interiors of coaches.
II  Important Test facilities available in the Lab.
  1.       Humidity chamber to check the corrosion resistance property of paint under conditions of condensation.
2.      Salt spray cabinet to test the corrosion resistance under saline conditions.
3.      Glass-o-meter of 450/600 angle of incidence to test the gloss of the paints.
4.      Abel’s flash point apparatus for checking the flash point of paint and   allied material.
5.      Black and white charts to find out the wet capacity of paints and primers.
6.      Flexibility and adhesion apparatus to find out cracking or detachment of film on  bending.
7.      Scratch hardness tester (Automatic) to check the hardness of the paint films.
8.      Flow cup (ford cup no. 4) to find out the viscosity of paints and primers.
9.      Wt/10 lit. cup to find out the mass in Kg/10 litre.
10.      Hegman gauge to check the fineness of grind of pigment .
11.    Centrifuge to separate the pigments from paints.
12.    Dry film thickness measuring device to find out the DFT  of paint film.
13.     Ring & ball apparatus to find out the softening point of bituminous materials.
14.    Accelerated weathering tester(QUV) to check the durability of paints.
15.    Hot air electric oven for heating and stoving of paints and other allied material
16.    Muffle furnace should be there for estimation of purity of pigments .
17.    Digital Elcometer for measuring the dry film thickness of paint coatings.

1 Nature of work :- Project work pertaining to requirement of data for designing of the Railway components .  
2  Importance Test Facilities :- The followings test facilities are as under 
  i) To conduct the fatigue properties of the materials .
 ii) To study the wear characteristics of the materials .
 iii) To evaluate the fracture toughness and FCGR of the materials
