Directorate has broadly been divided into two divisions i.e. Metallurgical & Chemical. These two divisions in turn are further subdivided according to the nature of R&D activities pursued. Metallurgical division comprises of laboratories engaged in Metallurgical investigation, instrumental analysis, metallography, non-destructive testing, welding, foundry, fatigue, fracture and wear. The chemical division comprises of laboratories conducting studies on paints, lubricants, rubber, plastics, composites, corrosion, fuels & tribology

To carry out research and developmental studies in the aforesaid areas, the Metallurgical & Chemical Directorate of RDSO is equipped with most modern testing facilities for evaluating metals, alloys, polymers, organic coatings, lubricants, fuels and electrodes. The range of testing facilities embrace mechanical properties, chemical composition, micro structural characteristics, fatigue and fracture toughness, behavior of metals under simulated conditions, physico chemical characteristics in respect of samples of paints, lubricants, rubber etc. and most importantly the range of non-destructive testing for critical components. It can easily be considered as one of the most sophisticated laboratories, housing facilities for both metallurgical and chemical tests under one roof. The various test facilities and R&D activities have been organised under the following divisions:-
|
|
- Non- Destructive Testing Laboratory
- Metallurgical Failure Analysis Laboratory
- Microscopy Laboratory
- Fatigue & Fracture Mechanics Laboratory
- Metallurgical Technology Development Laboratory
- Welding Research Laboratory
- Protective Coating Laboratory
- Corrosion Engineering Laboratory
- Tribology and fules laboratory
- Polymer laboratory
- NDT training centre.
