Welcome to Geotechnical Engineering Directorate

 

 

Role of Geotechnical Engineering Directorate:

Geotechnical Engineering Directorate of RDSO deals with Geotechnical Engineering matters of Indian Railways. It has well equipped laboratory with all conventional and latest modern soil testing facilities. Main areas of activities  involves  Advise on matters concerning Geotechnical Engineering to Indian Railways,  Framing and updating Guidelines/Manuals/Specifications for Earthwork, Ballast and Tunnels, Super check of earthwork in new constructions, Consultancy on Geotechnical Engineering problems to various Zonal Railways, Training of Railway personnel in Geotechnical Engineering. Adoption of new products/technologies pertaining to Geotechnical Engineering.

Brief achievement of the Directorate during last one year:

  • Guidelines on Design and Construction of Reinforced Earth Structures (for trial application in Railway sidings)
  • Guidelines for Design & Construction of Tunnels, safety in Tunnels during Construction, Civil Engineering Maintenance and Safety in existing Tunnels
  • Development of Small Width Vibratory Roller for compaction of earthwork in gauge conversion works and narrow width portion
  • Issue of Working Procedure for use of Nuclear Gauges to measure in- situ dry density and moisture content in earthwork.
  • Issue of Guidelines for Design/Construction of formation on Indian Railway
  • Track, rationalizing the thickness of Blanket Layer and/or Prepared Subgrade
  • Guidelines on Drainage System for Station Yards
  • Issue of Revised “Specification of Track Ballast” (IRS:GE-I,June’2016)
  • Method Statement for Investigation, Planning and Execution of Cuttings in Soil for Railway Projects
  • Specification for Non-Woven Geo textile to be used as separator/filtration layer for railway formation, Geo-composite Drain (Vertical) to be used behind Bridge abutment/Retaining wall, Geo-composite Drain (Horizontal) to be used at the base  of the embankment for Railway formation.

 

Current assignment in hand:

  • Design Methodology & Software Development for Railway Formation Design (under TMIR with IIT/Kanpur)
  • Development of Methodology and Specifications for Utilization of Steel Slag as Ballast Material in Railway Track (under TMIR with CSIR-CRRI)
  • Monitoring health of ballast bed with help of Ground Penetration Radar Technology for Through Ballast Renewal (TBR) in Indian Railways with TMM Directorate.
  • Geotechnical aspects for Construction of Test Track between Gudha - Thathana Mithari stations in Jodhpur Division of North Western Railway.
  • Development of suitable design of Bridge Transition system for 25T & 32.5T axle load for freight (up to 100 kmph) and passenger traffic (up to 160 kmph) for Indian Railways
