Welcome to Carriage Directorate

Role of Directorate:

Carriage Directorate of RDSO is actively engaged in the development of new designs/ specifications and upgradation/standardization of the existing designs/specifications of passenger coaches and its sub-systems. The main activities of the carriage directorate are:

  • Develop key drawings and specifications of new designs of coaching stock.
  • Validation of design by tests and trials along with PUs and testing directorate of RDSO.
  • Co-ordination with PUs and user railways in the area of failure investigation, design modification etc.
  • Standardization of design between RDSO and the PUs
  • Development of new advanced materials for coach interiors
  • Formulation of maintenance instructions of sub-assemblies like couplers etc.
  • Statutory clearance for operation of new rolling stock
  • Development of Specifications of assigned safety and other assigned items
  • Vendor development of assigned safety and other items to Carriage Directorate
  • Optimization of suspension parameters for all types of rolling stock using vehicle dynamics simulation software, NUCARS and ADAMS RAIL
  • Undertaking high end design activities like finite element analysis, vehicle dynamics simulation, crash analysis etc.

  5. World Class Metro Coaches for Kolkata Metro (Dalian).
  6. Automatic fire detection and suppression system.
  7. Efficient ventilation system for EMUs.
  8. Aerodynamic nose cone for HHP DEMU.
  9. Development of LHB AC-3 Tier Economy Coach.
  10. Development of LHB AC Vista-dome Tourist Coach.
  11. Development of AC Inspection Carriage (Administrative) LRAAC.
  12. Development of design drawings and conversion procedure for conversion of aged ICF Non-AC coaches to Automobile Carrier Coach (NMGH).
  13. Formation of Carriage Maintenance Instructions for Corrosion Repairs in LHB coaches.

  7. Development of COCR of new stock and remaining routes for 130 Kmph.

  8. Development of NG Rolling Stock for Kalka Shimla.

  9. Development of Study of Tilting/Articulated train designs (New Rolling Stock)

  10. Development of LHB wheel Improvement.

  11. Development Conical Strings for EMUs.

  12. Development of Condition monitoring for mainline Coaches.
