Welcome to Carriage Directorate



Role of Directorate:

Carriage Directorate of RDSO is actively engaged in the development of new designs/ specifications and upgradation/standardization of the existing designs/specifications of passenger coaches and its sub-systems. The main activities of the carriage directorate are:

  1. Develop key drawings and specifications of new designs of coaching stock.
  2. Validation of design by tests and trials along with PUs and testing directorate of RDSO.
  3. Co-ordination with PUs and user railways in the area of failure investigation, design
    modification etc.
  4. Standardization of design between RDSO and the PUs
  5. Development of new advanced materials for coach interiors
  6. Formulation of maintenance instructions of sub-assemblies like couplers etc.
  7. Statutory clearance for operation of new rolling stock
  8. Development of Specifications of assigned safety and other assigned items
  9. Vendor development of assigned safety and other items to Carriage Directorate
  10. Optimization of suspension parameters for all types of rolling stock using vehicle dynamics simulation software, NUCARS and ADAMS RAIL
  11. Undertaking high end design activities like finite element analysis, vehicle dynamics simulation, crash analysis etc.

  1. Automatic fire detection and suppression system.
  2. World Class Metro Coaches for Kolkata Metro (Dalian).
  3. 200kmph LHB train (Tejaz)
  4. Double Acting BMBC to reduce brake binding.
  5. Balance Draft CBC to reduce jerk.
  6. Crashworthy design of LHB variant coaches.
  7. Efficient ventilation system for EMUs.
  8. Aerodynamic nose cone for HHP DEMU.


Current Assignment in hand:

  • Setting up fire simulation facility at RDSO
  • Development of Conical rubber springs for primary suspension as alternative to dashpot guide arrangement for EMUs
  • Development of cast wheels for EMU’s
  • Development of indigenous solid forged wheels for EMU’s
  • Low cost FIAT Bogie
  • Preparation of specification for 130 KMPH DEMU
  • Optimizing Design of Soft Side Buffer/Coupling Arrangement and Setting up a Longitudinal Simulation facility
  • Development of Side Panel with Noise Damping
  • Auto resetting multi orifice passenger alarm device
  • Suspension and Bogie Technology for High Speed Trains - CRR Project with IIT, Kharagpur
