For the convenience of working, the directorate is headed by Principal Executive Director/Bridges and divided in two units, namely ED/B&S/Steel and ED/Structures.  Each unit is further divided in sub-units headed by a Director/Jt.Director. Distribution of works of each units is briefly given below:







Standard designs of open web girders, OWG Foot  Over  Bridges,  bridge  bearings,  Steel channel sleepers, Evaluation of new materials and construction techniques including development  of  FRP  girders,  Steel  Bridge Code. Design of BOW  String Arch Road Over Bridges. 





Standard design of plate and composite girders, Plate girder type FOB, Design of composite ROB and FOB, Design of temporary arrangement including RH plate girders and sub structure, Design of microwave towers, Rail-structure interaction studies, HSFG bolt connections.


Jt. Director/B&S-III


Compilation of instrumentation report received from zonal railways,  field trials and laboratory tests for validation of existing provision and evolving new criterion for design and strength assessment technique, study of various NDT techniques for adoption in bridge inspection monitoring, NDT testing of bridge. Speed clearance case, evaluation of long Life Painting systems.


Inspection of open web and welded girders fabricated  for Indian Railways & PSUs, POT bearings and Expansion joints.


Jt. Director/B&S-IV



Registration and renewal of vendors, Updating of STRs, guidelines, vendor status etc., IRS Bridge Rule, Schedule of Dimensions, Conducting Bridge Standard Committee Meetings.




Jt. Director/B&S-V



Coordination of Metro projects, Bridge management System, High Speed, semi high speed, semi high speed train operation, DBR of Metro Projects, Ballast less track (Slab track).  Co-ordinate with CVVC, IMD & MOST for analysis of hydro-metrological data and finalization of flood Estimation Reports for various zones, subzones, Manual of Railway Affecting Works revision/updation, collection of gauging/scour data from Zonal Railways, Inspection of gauging sites, validation studies of flood Estimation Reports for various sub-zones, other flood related issues, DBR of important bridges.





Standard design of PSC slabs and PSC Girders, Concrete Bridge code revision/updation, Launching techniques, inspection of PSC Bridges with I&T Unit, Analysis of Arch Bridges, Arch Bridge Code revision/updation.





Standard design of bridge substructure and foundations including well foundation, RCC slabs, RCC box culverts Limited Height Subway, RCC hume pipes, Pipeline crossings, Railway Structure Interaction (RSI), Inspection of substructure & RCC superstructures with I&T unit, Bridge substructure and foundation code revision/updation.  Manual on design and construction of well and pipe foundation revision/updation.
