A.  Current Project/Activities 

  

1. Setting up of Centre for Railway Research at IIT/ Kharaghpur

 

In order to develop a long term frame work for Research collaboration a Centre for Railway Research (CRR) has been setup at IIT/ KGP. MOU has been entered into between Ministry of Railways and IIT KGP on 13.02.2010 for facilitating long term research work on railway technologies. As per mandate defined in MOU signed, the Centre for Railway Research (CRR) shall carryout Research related to the following areas.

 

    * Heavy haul Technology

    * Vehicle Dynamics

    * High Speed Technologies

    * Energy efficient traction power supply system

    * Track research

    * Use of artificial intelligence for predictive maintenance and management

    * Material sciences for railway related composites including rubber, polymers and insulation    

       materials

    * Development of integrated/ embedded processors for railway application

    * Application for access control, security and safety including biometrics

    * Open platform population control system for rail vehicle

    * Non-conventional drives and technology including maglev, L.I.M

    * Remote sensing and measurement of OHE track and signals.

 

Railway board vide letter no. - 2010 / E&R / 3400 / 1 dated 11.05.2010 has suggested following areas for Research for CRR to begin with. -

 

    * Heavy haul Technology

    * High Speed Technologies

    * Material sciences for railway related composites including rubber, polymers and insulation

       materials

    * Use of artificial intelligence for predictive maintenance and management.

    * Accordingly fourteen projects on above nominated four areas have been identified and submitted

       to railway board for sanction

 

 

2. Field study of TBMS and HAHWD system installed at Ajgain system

 

RDSO and IIT/K have jointly developed HOT axle hot wheel detector (HAHWD) and trackside bogie monitoring system (TBMS) under Technology Mission of Railway Safety. (TMRS). Prototypes for both the systems are installed along the track side at Ajgain in LKO-CNB section. Both systems are acquiring the data round the clock for every train passing over the systems. After analysis of data report is generated for each train and communicated to the server on line. Primarily developed of the system have been completed and installed at track side before introducing this system all railways the consistency and repeatability of the data is required to be studied in association with the NR division, because without getting the proper feedback from the maintainer correlation between the defect and recorded parameter can’t be achieved.

 

B.  Recently Completed  Project

 

1.  Development of Ultra-Portable Track Monitoring System: 

MEMS based wireless Ultra-Portable Track Monitoring System (UTMS) has been developed indigenously by RDSO and IIT Kanpur jointly in the year 2012. OMS (Oscillation Monitoring System) is used as an inspection tool to be run occasionally. UTMS uses digital accelerometer and mmc card, Bluetooth Module to provide wireless data to recording equipment and it uses GPS technology for identification of location of jerk point on the track. Trail report can be easily generated using UTMS utilities

 

2.  Modernization of Electronics Lab:

 

The electronic lab of RDSO is the hub supporting the labs and field work of all directorates of RDSO. This lab was established in 1957.  This lab maintains the large population of Electronic equipment in use for these jobs. In many cases, circuits of equipment’s are not available any longer in the market, due to original supplier having shifted to other equipment, and these have to be developed in-house. Modernization of Electronics Lab has been completed in the year 2012 to deal the challenges posted by modern age cutting edge knowledge’s. Following facilities/instruments are available in Electronics Lab.
