To cut down the fuel consumption during idling, RDSO has started a pilot project to develop fuel cell assisted Auxiliary Power Units (APU) to be installed in Diesel-electric locomotives. The power unit shall be a battery- fuel cell combine which shall power a compressor to maintain MR & charge the batteries while the main engine is shut down.

Traction motor roller suspension bearing tubes & accessories are safety & critical items in the RDSO Vendor Directory. In view of increasing production of HHP locomotives at DLW, there is a need to develop more vendors while maintaining the quality standards. Moreover, it is also desirable to have common qualifying criteria for all the prospective vendors as well as a need to bring all the existing vendors to a minimum quality standard.

Instruction Bulletin on problem of frequent failures of TCC blower motor Contactors in ECC#1 panel of HHP locomotive

 

Imported Locomotives were supplied with TCC blower motor contactors having EMD part no. 40067784. However, around 2005, a change in part number was done by the OEM and the new part number introduced was EMD part no.401 261 67. Failure of these contactors (EMD part no. 401 261 67) are being reported from various sheds.

As per item No.2 & 7 recommended in the High Level Committee’s Report on Disaster Management over Indian Railways and based on RDSO’s specification No. MP-0.08.00.59 (Rev.-00), March’2005, 3-coach BG Diesel-Hydraulic HS SPART (with three power packs) fitted with M/s SAN’s powerpack has been manufactured by ICF, Chennai. A joint trial of the same has been carried out by ICF & RDSO on 23.03.2013 at Chennai. It has following important features.

·         Standard unit of 3-ca rake Consisting DPC-I (Supervisor Van )+TC (Medical Van) + DPC-II (Tool Van),

·         Equipped with medical van, tool van with hydraulic rescue devices and re-railing equipments

·         Driving cab at both ends for bi-directional operation with aerodynamic profile

·         Maximum speed potential of 120 km/h.

·         Each DPC is powered by 460hp single diesel engine underslung mounted

Technical specification for Light Weight Electric Tools.

 

As per item No. 62 of High level committee’s recommendation on disaster management, ART/ARMVs are required to be provided with Portable light weight electric tools. Accordingly, a specification for the same was prepared by RDSO. On the request of N.E. Railway the specification has been revised with the following features.

·       It shall be electrically operated and shall work on Portable Petrol Genset and working on 110 V AC or 220V AC, single phase, 50 hertz supply.

·       It shall be able to cut through round bars of 13mm diameter and mild steel /Corten steel sheet of 5mm thickness.

·       It shall be able to make round hole of 45 mm diameter. It shall have provision for fitment of additional attachment for enlargement of hole up to 100 mm diameter.

·       For rescue work at elevated position, aluminium collapsible ladder of 150 kg load capacity shall be provided.

Technical specification for Inflatable Air bags.

As per item No. 64 of High level committee’s recommendation on disaster management, ART/ARMVs are required to be provided with Inflatable air bags. Accordingly, a specification for the same was prepared by RDSO. On the request of N.E. Railway the specification has been revised with the following features.

·       Portable diesel compressor with accessories including air dryer.

·       Material of air bag shall not get punctured or swell out.

·       There should not be degradation in air bag due to ageing effect

High Speed BG DEMU on LHB platform

As per directives of Railway Board vide letter no. 2010/M (L)/101/2 dt. 28.02.2013, a draft Specification for High Speed BG DEMU on LHB Platform powered by under slung mounted 3- Phase AC-AC dsl.-electric traction (to be manufactured by IR) no. MP.0.08.00.106 (Rev-00) September-2013, has been prepared by RDSO with the following features.

·         12-car formation i.e. DPC+10TPC+DPC using LHB platform.

·         Max. operating speed 160km/h, can be upgraded to 200km/h.

·         Higher acceleration of 0.8 m/s2.

·         All the coaches powered with one 760hp diesel engine underslung mounted.

·         Aerodynamic Driving cab provided at one ends of DPCs for bi-directional operation.

·         fully suspended traction motor

·         All the coaches shall be air-conditioned with crashworthy design.

As per recommendation of High Level Committee on disaster management under item No. 64, each ART/ARMVs are required to be provided with Hydraulic Rescue Device (HRD). Accordingly, as per Railway Board’s directive received vide letter no. 2000/Dev.Cell/IGRI/23 dated 01.12.2000, a draft specification no. COFMOW/IR/HRD/2010 was prepared by COFMOW. On the request of COFMOW, New Delhi, above draft specification has been reviewed by RDSO. A technical specification no.  MP-0.08.00.105, Rev-00, Nov-2013 for Hydraulic Rescue Device (HRD) has been prepared by RDSO by incorporating following features.

Specification for procurement of fully machined ductile iron, cast engine blocks along with main bearing caps for ALCo 251 diesel engines had been framed. Accordingly in a global tender, the work was awarded to M/s Sichuan Yibin  Push Group Co. Ltd, China for 50 nos.

Strengthened engine block for increased horse power of 3300 and above so as to avoid the problem of bore misalignment, distortion, shrinkage and thermal loading.

RDSO has cleared Cast engine block drawings submitted by M/s Sichuan Yibin Push Group China and given go ahead for carrying out FEA.

The AC-DC ALCo locomotives have rectifier that is either cooled by air of plenum chamber in view of the alternator mounted rectifiers, the air requirement from the blowers has reduced and the blowers have been redesigned for 9500 cfm in place of existing 12000 cfm.

In these designs reduction in the blower capacity has lead to significant reduction in its power consumption.

Design and development of higher capacity radiator fan for 4500 hp EMD locomotives following successful benchmarking of indigenous fans

The EMD locomotives have been upgraded to 4500 GHP (CV) from the existing 4000 GHP (CV) This increase in power results in increased thermal loading of the engine. It was decided to  increase the sweep of the fans from 52” to 54” to increase the air flow capacity,

The increased air supply shall enable increased HP rating of 4500.

Complete switch over to the 54” design has been made.

DEMU (J&K) has provided an economic, efficient and reliable supplement to the existing means of transportation to the people of Kashmir Valley.

Modification of Exhaust Manifold from existing Three Entry to Modified Single Entry design for ALCO locos fitted with ABB TPR-61Turbocharger to improve its reliability

To overcome the problem, Single Entry exhaust manifold with improved features was developed and the same has been tested for its performance on the engine test bed as well as in the field and the results obtained were satisfactory. Therefore, it was decided to implement the single entry exhaust manifold.

Implementation of modified design will reduce pulsation on turbine blades, consequently reduction in turbine blade failures and also improve the reliability of turbochargers.

Implementation is under process in zonal railways.

Introduction of hybrid bearings in AC crank case motor

Railways have reported bearing related problems on AC crank case motors. Use of hybrid bearing has been seen as a better solution than the existing bearing. In order to validate this concept, existing crankcase motors have been fitted with hybrid bearing and imported oil seal for evaluation of the performance.

Reliability of bearing is likely to increase.

Thirty-four nos. of locomotives fitted with such crank case motors have been put on trial at AMV and Gonda Diesel sheds. The same is under monitoring.

To cut down the fuel consumption during idling, RDSO has started a pilot project to develop fuel cell assisted Auxiliary Power Units (APU) to be installed in Diesel-electric locomotives. The power unit shall be a battery- fuel cell combine which shall power a compressor to maintain MR & charge the batteries while the main engine is shut down.

Saving of fuel during idle hours by shutting down the main engine.

Traction motor roller suspension bearing tubes & accessories are safety & critical items in the RDSO Vendor Directory. In view of increasing production of HHP locomotives at DLW, there is a need to develop more vendors while maintaining the quality standards. Moreover, it is also desirable to have common qualifying criteria for all the prospective vendors as well as a need to bring all the existing vendors to a minimum quality standard.

This is a new STR to govern the minimum requirement qualification of vendors for suspension tubes & components. The quality control on the manufacturers & testing of the tubes & components shall improve.

Instructions for storage, handling and testing of Traction Motor speed sensors used in 4000/4500hp HHP locomotives

 

Railways have reported a number of speed sensor failures from time to time of M/s Norris, M/s Krauss Maffei and AJB make (all are Hall-effect sensors) used in the HHP locomotives.

Health of speed sensor of any make can be checked using the test setup mentioned therein so that sheds will be able to ascertain proper working of the speed sensors before fitment on loco / sending them to OEM for repair.

Revised Instruction Bulletin has been issued incorporating additional instructions on storage, handling and testing of TM speed sensors.

Imported Locomotives were supplied with TCC blower motor contactors having EMD part no. 40067784. However, around 2005, a change in part number was done by the OEM and the new part number introduced was EMD part no.401 261 67. Failure of these contactors (EMD part no. 401 261 67) are being reported from various sheds.

Improved throughput, understanding of the variations of coupler forces during run on long trains and development of strategy to mitigate the same.

As per item No.2 & 7 recommended in the High Level Committee’s Report on Disaster Management over Indian Railways and based on RDSO’s specification No. MP-0.08.00.59 (Rev.-00), March’2005, 3-coach BG Diesel-Hydraulic HS SPART (with three power packs) fitted with M/s SAN’s powerpack has been manufactured by ICF, Chennai. A joint trial of the same has been carried out by ICF & RDSO on 23.03.2013 at Chennai. It has following important features.

·         Standard unit of 3-ca rake Consisting DPC-I (Supervisor Van )+TC (Medical Van) + DPC-II (Tool Van),

·         Equipped with medical van, tool van with hydraulic rescue devices and re-railing equipments

·         Driving cab at both ends for bi-directional operation with aerodynamic profile

·         Maximum speed potential of 120 km/h.

·         Each DPC is powered by 460hp single diesel engine underslung mounted

Provision of modern kitchen equipments in the supervisor van in line with the design developed  by Vehicle factory at Jabalpur.

3-coach BG Diesel-Hydraulic HS SPART, in a single rake alongwith medical van & tool van, is capable to reach the accident site within the shortest possible time within the “Golden Hour” of accident.

3-coach BG Diesel-Hydraulic HS SPART (with Voith) has been inaugurated on 01.04.2013 at ICF.

Technical specification for Light Weight Electric Tools.

 

As per item No. 62 of High level committee’s recommendation on disaster management, ART/ARMVs are required to be provided with Portable light weight electric tools. Accordingly, a specification for the same was prepared by RDSO. On the request of N.E. Railway the specification has been revised with the following features.

·        It shall be electrically operated and shall work on Portable Petrol Genset and working on 110 V AC or 220V AC, single phase, 50 hertz supply.

·        It shall be able to cut through round bars of 13mm diameter and mild steel /Corten steel sheet of 5mm thickness.

·        It shall be able to make round hole of 45 mm diameter. It shall have provision for fitment of additional attachment for enlargement of hole up to 100 mm diameter.

·        For rescue work at elevated position, aluminium collapsible ladder of 150 kg load capacity shall be provided.

It is a portable, light weight, Electric Tools to be used primarily for quick and safe rescue operation of passengers entrapped inside the coaches, locomotive cabs and other rail-road vehicles involved in an accident.

The revised specification no. MP-0.08.00.44 Rev-04 has been issued to user railways vide RDSO’s letter no. SD. Disaster Management dated 10.06.2013

Technical specification for Inflatable Air bags.

As per item No. 64 of High level committee’s recommendation on disaster management, ART/ARMVs are required to be provided with Inflatable air bags. Accordingly, a specification for the same was prepared by RDSO. On the request of N.E. Railway the specification has been revised with the following features.

·        Portable diesel compressor with accessories including air dryer.

·        Material of air bag shall not get punctured or swell out.

·        There should not be degradation in air bag due to ageing effect

These air bags shall be used in re-railing operation where application of hydraulic jacks is not possible due to insufficient gap between the vehicle and ground. Also, it can be used for extricate passengers trapped inside the derailed coaches. Improvement in reliability.

On the request of COFMOW, New Delhi, above draft specification has been reviewed by RDSO. A technical specification no.  MP-0.08.00.105, Rev-00, Nov-2013 for Hydraulic Rescue Device (HRD) has been prepared by RDSO by incorporating following features.

It shall be used to carry out rescue operation in those areas where, it is not possible to carry out rescue operation with electric tools due to non-availability of power supply. It will improve the reliability of the equipment

5500hp WDG5 locomotive

Prototype WDG5 locomotive manufactured with improved features like E-locker, EUI, CCB-II IR and fabricated bogies etc. and oscillation trial of the locomotive conducted by RDSO. Accordingly, RDSO issued report no. MT-1242/F dated 08.04.2013 concluding that locomotive showed satisfactory riding behaviour up to 100 kmph.

Railways will be benefitted by utilising increased tractive effort and improved features of WDG5 locomotive

RDSO issued speed certificate for operation of WDG5 locomotive at 90 kmph.

Spec. of EP Assist Brake System for Diesel and Electric Locomotives application compatible with EP Assist Brake System on Coaches has been prepared on June 2010. As per RDSO Tender No. SP3/0043/MP/OT2010 dated 07.06.2010 opened on 15.07.2010, Prototype inspection was completed and IC has been issued to Store Dte. of RDSO on 21.08.2012.

Reduce the EBD & coupler forces

Material Fitment has been completed. CRS sanction No. C-11(135)/2013/963 dated 02.12.2013 has been received on 3.01.2014 through e mailed by Carriage Dte.  Trial to be conducted.
