For the convenience of working, the directorate is divided in two units, namely ED/Bridges and ED/Structures. Each unit is further divided in sub-units headed by a Joint Director/Director. Distribution of works of each units is briefly given below:
1.1 Director/SB-1 * Steel Bridge Unit I:
Standard designs of open web girders, bridge bearings, platform shelters, temporary arrangements, evaluation of new building materials and construction techniques, steel bridge code and bridge rule etc
.2 Director/SB2 * Steel Bridge Unit II:
Standard design of welded plate girders, composite girders, microwave tower, speed clearance cases, etc. P.C. based bridge management system and Bridge Standard Committee.
* Inspection Unit :
Inspection of open web and welded girders fabricated at railway bridge workshops and other units; inspection of bearings and expansion joints on request from Railways.
* Trials and Testing Units:
Field trials and laboratory test for validation of existing provisions and evolving new criteria for existing provisions and evolving new criteria for design and strength assessment techniques, study of various NDT techniques for adoption in bridge inspection and monitoring.
2.1 Director/CB1 * Concrete Bridge Unit I:
Standard design of PSC slabs and girders, Concrete Bridge Code, launching techniques, analysis of Arch Bridges and Arch Bridge Code, structure related to OHE mast, management of computers and related training.
2.2 Director/CB2 * Concrete Bridge Unit II:
Standard design of bridge sub-structures, RCC slabs, pipe/box culverts, Bridge Sub-structure and Foundation Code.
* Bridges and Flood Units:
Co-ordination with CWC IMD & MOST for analysis of hydro-metrological data and finalisation of Flood Estimation Reports for various zones/sub-zones, Manual of Railway Affecting Works, Inspection of gauging sites to ensure correctness of data recording; validation studies for various sub-zones.
